Wikklehouse – a special little house, made out of cardboard

We spend endless hours searching for eco-friendly and sustainable ideas that push the boundaries of what’s possible with cardboard and our latest find, the Wikklehouse, by Dutch company Fiction Factory does just that. Wikklehouse is a minimalistic eco-friendly modular home built entirely from cardboard. The Fiction Factory team behind the design prides itself on creating basic housing that is sustainably built to last and can be personalised to suit your preferences.

Wikklehouse - Simple cardboard housing

Wikklehouse is not the first time cardboard has been used as permanent building material but it might be one of the most energy efficient ways to build small-scale homes in the future.

Wikklehouse is Dutch for ‘Wrapping House’ and is built by an armature in a factory using nothing but large rolls of recycled cardboard. The cardboard is waterproofed and the exterior modules are finished with beautiful wood paneling and then shipped to their final location.

If you want a larger house, the Amsterdam creators can design it by simply adding more sections to the overall frame. Since no good home would be complete without a kitchen or bathroom, Wikklehouse can also include them to create the perfect eco-friendly residence.

After discovering the incredible Wikklehouse we felt inspired to dig deeper into the world of cardboard housing. We came across a story about prize-winning architect Shigeru Ban building shelters from our material. He won the Pritzker Architecture prize in 2014 after building simple housing and community buildings in areas destroyed by war or natural disasters.

Ban worked with local citizens, volunteers and students to design and construct simple, low cost, recyclable shelters and community buildings for the disaster victims. One of Ban’s most famous projects is a cardboard cathedral in New Zealand made entirely from cardboard tubes that was built to last an astonishing designed 50 years ago.
